Supporting the Humanities

The Association continues to make common cause with the US humanities community to support the cultivation and dissemination of research-based knowledge:

  • The Association sponsored the 2023 National Humanities Conference in Indianapolis, hosted by the Federation of State Humanities Councils and the National Humanities Alliance (NHA).
  • The Association also sponsored Humanities Advocacy Day 2024 during which state delegations visited Capitol Hill to meet in person with Members of Congress and their staffs. President Jane Bunker (Cornell) and Romi Gutierrez (Florida) attended as advocates.
  • Peter Berkery continued to serve on the NHA’s Board of Directors
  • The AUPresses Board of Directors, along with chairs of the Journals, Financial Operations, and Open Access Committees, received a presentation about and discussed the forthcoming National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Public Access Plan, which will primarily impact journal articles, with representatives of the NEH Office of Digital Humanities at the March 2024 Board meeting.
  • The Association and Ithaka S+R published “Print Revenue and Open Access Monographs: A University Press Study” in September 2023. This report is the result of research funded by an NEH Level I Digital Humanities Advancement Grant  to investigate the effect of open digital editions on the sales of print monographs. Co-principal investigators John Sherer (North Carolina) and Erich van Rijn (California) led the project, along with Research and Communications Director Brenna McLaughlin
