ANNUAL MEETING

The AUPresses 2023 Annual Meeting was held virtually over two weeks, June 5-6, 8-9, 12-13, and 15-16, 2023 with two time blocks each day to try to accommodate as many time zones as possible. Recordings of the sessions were available to attendees shortly after sessions ended through January 2024.

The 2023 Annual Meeting Program Committee, co-chaired by Hope LeGro (Georgetown) and Cameron Ludwick (Texas), developed a robust program with 3 plenaries and 49 concurrent sessions.

Highlights of AUPresses 2023, which was attended by a record 1,080 individuals , included an opening plenary with Jeremy Young, PEN America, Program Director, Freedom to Learn, discussing “Educational Censorship and the Work of University Presses;” a mid-program plenary with Mandy Hill, Managing Director, Cambridge University Press presenting on “Leading Change at a University Press;” and a closing plenary with April Baker-Bell, Associate Professor of Language, Culture, and Justice in Education, University of Michigan, discussing “Cultivating a Culture of Linguistic Justice and Equity in Academic Publishing.”

The Professional Development Committee, co-chaired by Nicole Solano (Rutgers) and Bethany Wasik (Cornell), paired 80 mentors and mentees through the AUPresses Mentorship Program, up from the previous year which had 57 pairings.

Seven companies sponsored AUPresses 2023. Vendor Digital Shorts were offered for the first time in place of a virtual exhibit hall. The Vendor Digital Shorts were one- to three-minute pre-recorded presentations aired at the start of some sessions that highlighted recent vendor developments of interest to the university press community. Nineteen spots were purchased, featuring 15 different vendors.

A popular promotion of Buy 3 Get 1 Free was available to AUPresses members. The Association also offered complimentary registration to Ukrainian university presses. Ten publishers were able to take advantage of this opportunity.

DIRECTORS SUMMIT

In April 2023, the Board of Directors made the decision to hold a Directors Summit in-person during years in which the AUPresses Annual Meeting is virtual.

The Association hosted the first biennial in-person Directors Summit in Rosemont, IL, at the Big Ten Conference Center in October 2023, with 65 Press Directors and Board Members in attendance. The Summit kicked off with an opening dinner and talk from guest speaker Jeff Deutsch of the Seminary Co-op Bookstores. A full day of programming began the next morning. The Summit was focused on joint problem-solving in response to trends raised in the Fall 2022 Constituency Calls, such as vendor consolidation, material and staffing cost increases, economic contraction in higher education, and government public and open access policies. The Summit was dedicated to knowledge sharing about each “headwind” area, with one hour breakout groups for discussions. Breakout rooms on each topic took up the questions, “What are the trends you are seeing in this sector?” and “What are strategies you are adopting to engage with these?” After the breakout groups reconvened, the entire group spent thirty minutes reporting back on their discussions.

The second day was a half-day focus group for Press Directors who wish to explore the business and operational challenges—and opportunities—presented by the ever-increasing array of funder mandates for open/public access.
